Abstract:
This is a GIS data layer of polygons representing Submerged Aquatic Vegetation of Barnegat Bay - Little Egg Harbor, 1996 to 1999. The data are a compilation of GPS survey data by Paul Bologna (1999) and hard copy maps by Paul McLain (1996) that were digitized by the Grant F. Walton Center for Remote Sensing and Spatial Analysis (CRSSA), Rutgers University. Included are the submerged aquatic vegetation types mapped throughout the study area and their respective area and perimeter for each polygon.
Purpose:
The data were initially created as part of the 'Landscape Scale Approaches to Coastal Habitat Conservation - Barnegat Bay' study that focused on the loss of submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) that is occuring in Barnegat Bay as a result of human modification and decreasing water quality in the bay and watershed across time. CRSSA has compiled SAV studies conducted in the 1960's, 1970's, 1980's, 1990's to facilitate habitat loss assessment in Barnegat Bay. As of this writing, CRSSA continues to map and monitor submerged aquatic vegetation as part of its on-going Coastal Studies Program.

The sav99 shapefile was compared to existing Arc/INFO coverages of Barnegat Bay and the New Jersey coastline (coastply2) to ensure spatial accuracy.

A field survey of seagrasses was conducted during the summers of 1996, 1997 and 1998 (McLain and McHale 1996) and 1999 (Bologna et al. 2000). The middle portion of the bay was mapped in 1996, the northern portion in 1997 and the southern portion (e.g., Little Egg Harbor) in 1998. The southern portion of the bay was re-mapped in 1999 using a differentially corrected (post-processing) global positioning system (GPS). During boat-based surveys, SAV beds were identified and boundaries were mapped onto a 1:40,000 scale NOAA nautical chart (Charts # 12324 and 12316). The dominant species (i.e., Zostera or Ruppia) was noted. These annotated charts were then table digitized and integrated with the GPS mapped data.
